Screen savers are static or moving images that are displayed on your computer after some period of inactivity. The original concept behind screen savers was that they prevented your computer's monitor from being permanently 'imprinted' with a specific pattern when it was left on for too long without changing. Modern monitors are not as susceptible to this kind of damage, but it is still a good idea to use a screen saver or to have your monitor automatically use power-saver mode after a given period with no activity. Using a screen saver is an excellent way to protect your computer from prying eyes when you are away from your desk. To further protect your data, you can require that your password be entered to unlock the screen saver after it is set in motion. In this exercise, you will select a screen saver that consists of a slideshow of photographs. Whereas disk management is all about the mechanics of configuring disks, storage management is where you actually get to use those disks for something. In this chapter we ll cover some of the features of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 that enable you to manage storage, protect critical files, and provide versioning of shared files to protect against corruption or misadventure. Additional backup and recovery details are covered in 13, Backing Up and Restoring Data. But first, a word about file systems and why we care.

Under the Hood NTFS The underlying file system format for Windows Small Business Server is the Microsoft Windows NT File System, or NTFS. Originally introduced with the first version of Windows NT and essentially unchanged until Microsoft Windows 2000, NTFS was substantially enhanced for Windows 2000 and then again for Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Although it is technically possible to use the old File Access Table (FAT or FAT32) file system for some of your storage with Windows Small Business Server 2003, by attaching or installing disks that have already been formatted with FAT, NTFS is the only supported file system and is necessary to support disk quotas, shadow copies, and encryption.
